The aging of the population represents one of the biggest challenges to life sciences and to policies on healthcare across the world. Thus, a big part of international investments are directed at this sector, looking to converge new scientific discoveries with practical applications that benefit society.
In Santa Catarina, there is a huge unexplored potential in the area. Although the sector does not yet account for a significant employment generation index, the investments in the life quality of the population (proven in official healthcare and longevity studies) demonstrate that the state offers big opportunities.
One example is the volume of related product imports (for example, MRI apparatus), which corresponds to almost 5% of Brazilian totals, indicating a strong capacity for leveraging new market niches in the gaps in the Santa Catarina production chain.
INVENTIVE TO RESEARCH AND TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT
Traditionally, Santa Catarina encourages the development of key sectors in healthcare, such as the pharmaceutics industry and technological research directed at life sciences, promoting human resources and encouraging academic means. As a result, various multinationals in the sector have invested, for example, in the Itajaí Healthcare Logistics Center, which claims to be one of the biggest centers importing and distributing healthcare products in the country.
